As you’re well aware, getting a good night’s sleep is one of the best things you can do for the health of your body and mind. So it’s definitely a good idea to try and eliminate any potential risk factors that could lead to disruption of those sweet hours of shut-eye.

A common hazard in most bedrooms is the presence of allergens. These can negatively affect the quality of your sleep, as well as lead to bigger health issues down the line. If you wake up regularly with a congested nose and watery eyes, there’s a good chance you might have dust mites or some other allergens nearby. Luckily, there are a few tried and tested methods of reducing their impact. Here are six tips that should aid you in your quest for an allergen-free bedroom:

1.Wash your bedding and pillowcases regularly Bed mites feed off the skin cells you shed every night, which have a tendency to accumulate over time. Thus, by washing your bed sheets and pillow covers in hot water every week, you eliminate their main source of food. If you’re using only white fabrics, feel free to add a little bleach to the washing machine for a more thorough cleaning.

2. Replace your bedroom essentials with hypoallergenic products Certain fabrics are especially resistant to allergens, so consider replacing your old pillows, blankets, sheets and pillowcases with versions that will not allow dust mites to seep through them. Latex or wool are a great choice when it comes to pillows, while cotton or bamboo will work well for sheets.

3. Invest in dust mite covers Even if you’re not ready to replace your bedding overnight, you can still opt for encasing them in dust mite covers. These add a protective layer to your mattress and pillows, one that cannot be penetrated by those pesky dust mites or other allergens.

4. Take steps to reduce humidity Most allergens tend to thrive in areas with high humidity, so getting a stand-alone dehumidifier will go a long way towards making the air unwelcoming for dust mites and such. Try to maintain a relative humidity of 35-50% and make sure to clean your dehumidifier tray regularly in order to prevent mold from appearing.

5. Keep pets away from your sleeping area It’s easier said than done, but animals shouldn’t come into contact with your bed. No matter how clean they may be, their fur can be a source of numerous allergens that will eventually take their toll on your health. So next time Fido or Felix try to hop onto your mattress, gently usher them to another part of the house.

6. Declutter and clean your bedroom There’s just no substitute for plain cleanliness. By keeping your bedroom neat and tidy and removing unneeded objects such as stuffed animals or extra pillows, you’ll reduce the number of places for allergens to collect. For best results, be sure to vacuum thoroughly and wipe the dust off every surface.

Overall, these tips should come in handy when it comes to minimizing allergens in your house. The path towards a peaceful sleeping environment requires a bit of work and dedication on your part, but the reward of feeling fully rested after a good night’s sleep is well worth it.
